MPM_Admin Yes. Non-licensed staff such as medical assistants and billing staff can enter CPT II codes but there must be a supervising provider in order to submit the encounter. Some practices give rights to staff to submit CPT II codes. Others require that the orders be pended for sign-off by a provider. It’s a good idea to have standing orders or P&P’s outlining the training, scope, oversight, etc., and get input from providers, nurses and human resources staff. Be cautious that the CPT II coders are simply coding information that already exists in the signed, legal medical record.
